The Addiction-Prone Child -3 credit hours

What is addiction? What is an addictive personality? How can I tell? What  can I do? Can addiction be predicted, prevented, stopped or cured? Which treatment is best? How do I know what's working?

These are just a few of the questions today's foster parents ask when it comes to their children, and to addiction risk factors. Along with abuse, neglect, violence, incarceration and mental illness, addiction is a major reason that many children need foster care in the first place.

Acute Crisis - A Developmental Perspective - 3 credit hours
Course goals:
In being a Foster Parent, a Social Worker or Marriage Family Therapist, you’ve taken on a huge responsibility.  Working with children in crisis takes patience, persistence, compassion, and education.  Frustrating at times, this work has immense rewards.  Knowing how to take care of somebody and watching them improve brings joy beyond words.  Helping somebody from a crisis intensifies this feeling.  This can only take place if you make yourself the number one priority.

Developing Tools to Effectively Deal with Crises - 3 credit hours
What makes this approach different is:
Crises are handled “Holistically” – Physically, Mentally, Emotionally, and Spiritually.
A Developmental Model is adhered to – learn how past wounds effect our current lives.
Unresolved Core issues (that drive current crises) are worked upon in compassionate, and sometimes playful ways.
The responsibility for change is placed on your shoulders – the parent.
My Parent Training
Family Foster Care Pre-Service Program

Family Foster Care is 24-hour care provided by foster families in their homes.  Foster parents are a valuable resource in returning children to a safe, nurturing home. When people apply to become foster parents for SCF:

They take 30 hours of pre-service training which includes children's developmental abilities by age, as well as how to deal with issues that foster children have, such as loss and grief, sex abuse, and drug addicted parents.

A home study is done which includes interviews, reference and medical checks, criminal records checks, and a child safety home inspection.

Pre-Service Presentation

I went and shared my feelings and motivations for becoming a Foster Parent.. I was so nervous, I must have stuck my foot in my mouth several times. But Ron and Sandy were great and walked me through it...
It was a good experience and I encourage all to do it at least ONCE :o)
A list of the most common mental disorders.
Starting in March, foster homes will be recertified for two years, rather than one year. The certifier (Janna) however. will be coming to your house at least every six months to see how things are going and to offer services.

There are many changes coming in the area  of Foster Home Certification. One is that the number of hours of training expected of ongoing foster parents will be increased to 15 hours a year, up from the current 10.

Also the Pre-Service training will now be called FOUNDATIONS.
Think outside of the box when earning your Training Hours:

When in doubt, don't throw them out,

Ask Janna if you can use it.

The following will be accepted as on going training:
